Jared`s painting "The Glove Collector" was announced as the major prize winner in "The Waltzing Matilda Spirit of The Outback" Art Competition
Jared Gilbey, artist and illustrator, was born in 1968 and grew up on the coast in Cornwall, UK. He Studied Technical illustration at Falmouth School of Art and at twenty moved to London where he freelanced for a decade producing illustrations for many major clients worldwide.
In 1996 Jared left England to travel for two years. During this time his Inspiration to paint caught up with his career in commercial art. On returning to the UK Jared moved to Brighton where he had his first solo exhibition called “Seascape” at “The Brighton Artist`s Gallery of Contemporary Art” which was a resounding success.
“I have always been drawn to the ocean and it`s ever changing moods, and I am constantly exploring the simplicity and diversity of colour to convey it`s majesty”
Jared`s work turned next towards figurative paintings celebrating his love of the female form. During this time his paintings were exhibited in many group shows nationally.
“Light and full of life colors, nudes expressing with emotion an ode to woman and nature, simple poses and a mastery of light that give them a particular aura, a feeling that moves deeply.” Incubus Choice.

The decaying Victorian structure of Brighton`s West Pier was to be Jared`s next focus. He produced a series of atmospheric images of this beautiful icon that has unfortunately been allowed to rot.
In 2006 Jared moved to rural Queensland, Australia. These new surroundings were the inspiration for his next solo show “New Works” at “The Frances Reilly Gallery” on the Sunshine Coast. Jared`s painting “The Glove Collector was chosen as the Major Prize Winner of “The Waltzing Matilda Spirit of The Outback” Art Prize Queensland 2007.
Judge Brian Dean described the work as ” ...deceptively dead-pan - nine old pairs of gloves stuck on a wall. But the tactile, sensual quality of the painting enables us to almost feel the contact of the worn leather. The composition is subtle…. allowing alternating patterns of light and dark to animate the low ‘relief’ effect of the objects.
Jared now lives back in Brighton UK and is currently producing a series of figurative works, and continues to illustrate.
